Bowling for BUCS: Gatorade Nationals Report

The highlight of the student bowling calendar is the BUCS Gatorade Nationals which this season took place in Sheffield (at 1st Bowl, Firth Park) on the weekend of the 23rd/24th February 2013.

British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS) is the organisation that governs almost all student level sport in Great Britain, and Tenpin Bowling comes under its remit.

The BUCS Tenpin Bowling Championships (this year sponsored by Gatorade for the first time as part of a weekend of BUCS Championship events in a variety of sports in Sheffield!) has long been the flagship event of student bowling (previously known as the BUSA Champs and before that the UAU Champs), as Universities and Colleges across the land compete with each other to win or place as highly as they can at the bowling championships and at as many different BUCS sporting events as they can, thus enhancing the sporting standards of their institution.

Incredible Performances at Imperial

BUTBA’s third Order of Merit (OoM) tournament of the 2012-3 Season was the Imperial Scratch & Handicapped Trios, which was bowled at The City Pavilion (Rollerbowl) Romford on 18^th November 2012.

Nottingham Never Fails to Deliver

BUTBA’s second major tournament of the season, the Nottingham Handicapped Combination Fives, took place at 1st Bowl Nottingham on Sunday 28th October (and included an EGM in the middle of it, to deal with urgent matters that had arisen since the AGM!).

Oiled Down Warwick

The 2012-3 BUTBA season got underway with its first OoM Tournament, the Warwick Scratch Matchplay Doubles, on Saturday 20th October at 1st Bowl Nuneaton. This is the only Scratch OoM tournament that we run, and as such has a habit of throwing up some impressive scores, but unfortunately this season it will be remembered more because of the controversy surrounding it, than because of the events of the tournament itself.

New Season, New BUTBA, Same Old Press Secretary

To mark the end of one season of student bowling and the start of the next we held the traditional Masters Weekend of bowling on the 6th and 7th of October 2012. This was comprised of the BUTBA (British Universities Tenpin Bowling Association) Men’s Scratch Masters, the Ladies’ Scratch Masters and the Handicap Masters tournaments on the Saturday (with the Order of Merit Trophy Presentation in the middle of it!), and the BUTBA Student vs Ex-student Challenge Match on the Sunday (with our AGM in the middle of it!), all of which were held at 1st Bowl in Nottingham.

In other words, an awful lot happened over a single weekend, and I’ll do my best to summarise events as succinctly as possible!
